Library, Edge Hill
August 2018

Opened in time for the new academic year 2018, the Catalyst at Edge Hill University provides a space for both student services and study facilities under one roof, creating a central hub of information, learning and advice on campus. Each floor reflects the increasingly independent level of study as you travel up through the light filled atrium, creating a variety of different study spaces suited to the constantly expanding student population.

The glazed ground floor is the most social space, providing a coffee shop, the student advice desk and a range of communal study spaces of different scales and levels of enclosure. There are a range of spaces, for small group work, through to open booking spaces providing opportunities  for a range of activity including community engagement and  workshops. Staff offices are also housed on the ground floor, creating easy student to staff communication.

The second floor provides smaller private rooms for students to speak to support staff, and an increased number of individual study spaces, each with their own power source and adjustable light. The book stacks and reprographic hubs are illuminated by large light wells that provide a bright and engaging study space.

The third floor houses a silent study area, the visual connection with the energy of the building remains, whilst providing the ideal conditions for concentrated learning. The third floor space is enveloped by the roof garden that provides a tranquil break away area with views across the rest of campus, the countryside, and the coastline.
